Mud kitchen guide

Mud kitchen play · 20–30 minutes

Stone soup

Three rocks, water, and a pot — the story made physical. Tell it once; they stir and serve.

Reach for this when

they ask "what can I make?" but plain mud pies already happened twice this week.

What you need

  • 3–5 smooth rocks (golf-ball size or bigger)
  • Water bucket or hose
  • 3–4 plastic measuring cups
  • Mud kitchen pot or large bowl

How to play

  1. You: Wasp-check the counter and bowls — open, peek under the shelf, shake once. They: Wait at the hose until you say clear.
  2. You: Fill the pot halfway — they carry cups from the bucket; you pour from the hose if the bucket is too heavy. They: Pour until they say enough.
  3. You: Hand three rocks one at a time: "Each rock makes the soup better." They: Drop rocks in, stir with a stick or spoon.
  4. You: Taste-test with a leaf "spoon" first — dramatic slurp. They: Serve you a cup of soup; drink pretend or dump it back and refill.

If it flops

No interest in the story? Skip narration — "how many cups to fill the pot?" and let them pour rock after rock until the water overflows.
