Mud kitchen play · 20–30 minutes

Mud pie shop

Colander for "flour," muffin tin for inventory, pinecones as coins — you're the customer, they run the shop.

Reach for this when

they keep bringing you things to "buy" or want to play store outside.

What you need

  • Plastic colander
  • 6-cup muffin tin
  • Measuring cups
  • 3–5 pinecones
  • Mud and dry dirt on the counter

How to play

  1. You: Name the shop together — "Sam's Mud Pies" is fine. Set colander and muffin tin on the counter. They: Decide the sign/name.
  2. You: Sift dry dirt through the colander into a cup once — "that's the flour." They: Repeat sifting; dump and refill until they're satisfied.
  3. You: Wait off to the side — no rushing inventory. They: Fill muffin cups, top with pinecones, call you when ready.
  4. You: Walk up as customer: "One pie, please." Pay with a pinecone; eat dramatically. Ask for the menu. They: Hand pies, make change, invent flavors.

If it flops

Shop stalls after one sale? Become a picky customer — "Do you have blueberry?" — and watch them invent a new batch.
