Overview
One of the oldest St. Patrick's Day parades in the country, drawing over 100,000 people down Market Street on the Saturday closest to March 17. What makes it work for families is the format: it's a daytime parade, starting at 11:30 am, which means you get the full spectacle without the late-night chaos. Irish dance companies, pipe bands, floats, city officials, police, and fire units all make an appearance. The pipe bands in particular are genuinely loud and impressive close-up — kids who are into sound and spectacle will be locked in.

How to Do It
The parade runs from 2nd and Market Street down to Civic Center Plaza. BART to Montgomery Street (at 2nd and Market) drops you right at the start. Muni routes along Market also work. Driving on St. Patrick's Day in this part of SF is a poor use of your time — street closures along Market are extensive and parking in the area around Civic Center is tight.
For viewing spots, the best family position is around Market and McAllister, where the parade route turns toward Civic Center. This intersection tends to be less packed than the blocks directly in front of City Hall, and it's where the route narrows slightly and the units slow down — better for actually seeing what's happening. Aim to arrive by 10:30–10:45 am to claim sidewalk space. The first 2–4 blocks of the route near 2nd Street are also good options: fewer people, and units are still well-organized at the start before the crowds compress.
After the parade, the festival moves to Grove and Polk Streets near City Hall. Youth Sports Day runs 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at Civic Center Plaza — kids ages 6–15 can try Gaelic football, hurling, camogie, rugby, and soccer. It's the underrated part of this event for active families. The post-parade party at the United Irish Cultural Center (2700 45th Ave) starts at 2:00 pm and is free for anyone under 18.
Tips & Tricks
The atmosphere on Market Street before noon is family-appropriate and genuinely fun. Things change after about 1:30 pm as the alcohol-focused crowd grows — plan to head out by 1:00 pm if you have young kids, or pivot to Youth Sports Day at Civic Center, which has a calmer energy.
Bring a small folding step stool for kids under five. The sidewalk crowds along Market are manageable but not minimal; a step stool lets a 3–4 year old actually see over the adults in front. Alternatively, shoulder-carry for the duration. Strollers become difficult once the crowd builds — leave yours at the car or at home.
Dress in green — it is genuinely more fun to participate in the theme, and kids get a kick out of everyone around them doing the same. Bring layers; March in SF ranges from cold and foggy to mild and sunny, sometimes in the same morning.
The pipe band units are multiple groups performing throughout the route. If your kids love the sound, stake out a spot and let the parade come to you rather than trying to move along the route with the crowd.

Planning
The parade and festival are free. The parade runs 11:30 am to roughly 2:00 pm on the Saturday nearest March 17 (check uissf.com each year for the exact date). Youth Sports Day at Civic Center is free. The post-parade party at the United Irish Cultural Center costs $10 for adult non-members; kids under 18 are free.
Bring: layers, waterproof shoes or boots (Market Street in March can be wet), snacks and a water bottle, and green clothing for the kids. Strollers are workable on the sidewalk before crowds peak but get difficult by parade time. Ages 2–8 can all enjoy the parade; the Youth Sports Day activities skew toward kids 6 and up. The event wraps up well before evening, making this one of the most civilized family parades in the city calendar.
