Overview
The San Gregorio General Store has been in continuous operation since 1889, and it feels like it. A pot-bellied stove, a working micro post office, walls packed with cast iron cookware and philosophy books, and a full bar that pours a serious Bloody Mary — all of it alive with live bluegrass or folk music on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The store sits at the junction of Stage Road and Highway 84, and a one-mile drive west on 84 brings you to San Gregorio State Beach, a broad, low-key stretch of sand with a seasonal lagoon where kids can wade. This is a road trip more than a destination: drive Stage Road, stop at the store, hit the beach.

How to Do It
From Highway 1 southbound, turn east on Highway 84 (La Honda Road) at the San Gregorio junction — the store is immediately at 7615 Stage Road. From the Peninsula, take I-280 to Highway 84 west through the redwoods and descend to the coast. Stage Road itself runs 7 miles between Pescadero and San Gregorio — a narrow, winding two-lane through coastal grasslands, eucalyptus groves, and small farms. Drive it north from Pescadero toward the store, not the other direction, so you arrive at the store with the beach still ahead of you. Parking at the store is free and usually easy to find except during peak music hours on weekend afternoons. For the beach, turn west on Highway 84 from the store junction and the state beach parking lot is about a mile down on the right (address: La Honda Rd and Cabrillo Hwy/Highway 1, San Gregorio). The beach lot charges $8, accepted by card at a pay station on-site.

Tips & Tricks
Weekend live music runs in two sets: 11am–1pm and 2–5pm, both Saturday and Sunday. The store also has music Friday from 5–7pm. Arriving between sets — around 1–1:30pm — means you walk in between crowds, get a good spot, and catch the full afternoon set. The breakfast braids are worth ordering if they're still available when you arrive. The store's interior is genuinely tight and navigating a stroller is difficult; carry or wrangle toddlers inside. At San Gregorio State Beach, the seasonal lagoon at the north end of the beach (where San Gregorio Creek meets the ocean) is the most interesting spot for young kids — shallow enough to wade safely, and the sand bar shifts with the season. Dogs are not allowed on the beach at any time, but are allowed on leash in the parking lot and picnic areas. From May through August 2026, the beach lot is experiencing partial disruption due to ADA restroom replacement construction — parking remains available but access to certain areas may be temporarily affected.

Planning
The store is free to enter. San Gregorio State Beach charges $8 to park. Store hours are Monday–Thursday 11am–6pm, Friday 11am–8pm, Saturday–Sunday 10am–6pm. The beach is open 8am to sunset. No reservations needed anywhere. Bring a windbreaker and an extra layer for everyone — even on warm Peninsula days, the coast sits in a different climate zone and afternoon wind is reliable. Good beach shoes or old sneakers work better than sandals at San Gregorio; the sand is coarser and there's often kelp and debris near the waterline. Pack snacks and drinks — there are no food concessions at the beach and the store's food selection is limited to snacks and whatever they're making that day. Late spring through early fall (April–October) is the window; winter visits are cold and the beach can be rough. Best age fit is 2–7: old enough to walk the beach and engage with the store, young enough to be delighted by the creek wading.
