San Francisco Zoo

The San Francisco Zoo sits on 65 acres at the edge of Ocean Beach, which makes it one of the few zoos in the country where you walk from giraffes and penguins directly to the Pacific coast fog. The Fisher Family Children's Zoo — a six-acre zone within the zoo — was purpose-built for the under-8 crowd and includes a walk-through aviary, a family farm where kids can pet goats and sheep, and close-up viewing of meerkats and prairie dogs. It's a full morning or full-day destination depending on how long your kids want to linger at the giraffe feeding station.

How to Do It

Drive in via Sloat Boulevard if you're coming from the East Bay or Peninsula — the entrance is at Sloat and 47th Avenue. From the north or along the coast, use the Great Highway entrance. Parking runs $11 on weekdays and $13 on weekends and holidays; pay at a kiosk on the day of your visit. If you're coming by Muni, take the L Taraval line outbound to the last stop or hop the 18 or 23 bus — show your same-day Muni pass at the ticket window and get $1 off admission. Enter through the main gate on Sloat and start left toward the African Savanna first, before midday crowds build at the giraffe feeding area. Work your way around to the Fisher Family Children's Zoo in the back half of your visit, ending there so younger kids can burn remaining energy at the Family Farm and on the Little Puffer steam train. The 1927 Dentzel Carousel and the Little Puffer train are not included in general admission — both require separate tickets ($4 carousel, $7 train; kids 3 and under ride the train free).

Tips & Tricks

Arrive at 10am when the zoo opens and head directly to the African Savanna giraffe feeding area before the line gets long. The giraffes are most active in the morning and the keeper interaction there is one of the genuinely impressive moments for kids of any age. Penguin Island is across from the Lion House and hosts one of the most successful captive Magellanic penguin colonies in the world — check the daily schedule at the main gate for grizzly bear and penguin feeding times, which vary by day. Sunday is consistently the least crowded day of the week at the zoo, meaning shorter waits at the carousel and train and easier navigation with a stroller. The zoo participates in the Museums for All program, so EBT/SNAP cardholders can purchase up to four admission tickets at $5 each — worth knowing. Ocean Beach is directly across the Great Highway from the parking lot exit, and the exit only flows northbound, so factor that into your departure route.

Planning

Admission runs $29–$31 for adults (12–64), $20–$22 for children (2–11), and $24–$26 for seniors — weekday rates are a few dollars lower than weekends and holidays. Children under 2 are free. SF residents pay discounted rates at all times. A family membership starts around $99 and pays for itself in two visits for most Bay Area families — worth calculating before you buy individual tickets. Parking is $11 weekdays, $13 weekends. The zoo is open daily 10am–5pm with last entry at 4pm. No reservations required. Dress in real layers — the Outer Sunset runs 10–15 degrees colder than downtown SF, fog is common year-round, and the wind off Ocean Beach cuts hard in the afternoon. A fleece or light jacket for each person is not optional. Bring snacks and a water bottle; the zoo has food concessions but they're expensive. The steam train and carousel add $4–$7 per person on top of admission, so budget accordingly. This works well for all ages in the range, though the Fisher Family Children's Zoo is most impactful for kids 1–6.
