Overview
Point Isabel is the most visited off-leash dog park in the United States — 50 acres of flat waterfront trail along the east side of San Francisco Bay, with views across to the Golden Gate Bridge and Mount Tamalpais. On a weekend morning, hundreds of dogs are running loose around kids and strollers, which is the entire point. Even families without a dog come here specifically for the spectacle. The Mudpuppy's dog wash and the Sit & Stay Cafe sit right at the trailhead, making this one of the few parks where you can get a decent espresso before starting your walk.

How to Do It
The park entrance is at 2701 Isabel St, Richmond. There are two free parking lots off Isabel Street and Rydin Road, plus street parking along Isabel St. The main lot fills first on weekend mornings — if you arrive after 9am on a sunny Saturday, expect to circle. Rydin Road has overflow street parking with a short walk to the trail entrance. No transit serves the park directly; a rideshare from Richmond BART takes about 10 minutes.
The trail system is paved and loops around the perimeter with views the entire way. The main out-and-back along the bay is about 2 miles round trip and completely flat — a stroller-friendly surface throughout. Start at the Mudpuppy's end, walk the waterfront out toward the fishing pier and the restored wetlands area, then circle back. The wetlands section on the south side tends to have more birds and slightly fewer dogs, which is a good spot to slow down with younger kids. Dogs must be on leash in the parking lot and on the street but are off-leash throughout the trail area, with owners responsible for voice control.

Tips & Tricks
Arrive before 8:30am on weekends if you want the full experience without fighting for a parking space or maneuvering a stroller through a dense crowd. The park draws over 1.5 million visitors a year and most of them come on weekend mornings. Weekday mornings are dramatically quieter and the dogs-to-people ratio is still excellent.
The Sit & Stay Cafe is open daily 8am–4pm and stocks coffee, pastries, sandwiches, soups, and ice cream — it is a genuine cafe, not a snack shack, and skips the packing-lunch calculation entirely for a 90-minute outing. Mudpuppy's dog wash next door is open the same hours if you own a dog and want to wash off bay mud before the drive home.
Kids who are nervous around dogs may have a hard time here — the whole park is off-leash and there are dogs in every direction. For dog-confident kids, it is the opposite: the sheer variety of breeds and the chaos of dogs sprinting into the water is a legitimate thrill. Manage expectations in either direction before arriving.
The wind off the bay is real year-round, particularly in the afternoon. A light layer is worth packing even in summer. Morning visits get better weather and better parking; afternoon visits in summer often mean wind and a rougher lot situation.
Planning
Admission is free, parking is free. No reservations needed. Open daily from 5am to 10pm. The Sit & Stay Cafe is open daily 8am–4pm. The park is fully operational year-round — there is no bad season, though winter weekday mornings in the rain are obviously lighter on crowds. Best for all ages including infants in strollers. The flat, paved surface makes it one of the most stroller-accessible parks in the East Bay. Dogs must be licensed, vaccinated, and under voice control; owners must carry a leash at all times. Bring water for everyone — the bay air and walking in the sun consume more than you expect.
