Oakland Museum of California

The Oakland Museum of California covers the full sweep of the state — art, history, and natural sciences — across three floors, terraced gardens open to the public, and an outdoor plaza with Lake Merritt views. What makes it genuinely worth the trip for families with young kids is the OMCA Kids: Nature Playspace inside the natural science gallery — 1,800 square feet of hands-on exhibits designed for ages 2 to 5, including a working stream fish tank, lava tubes to crawl through, a redwood stump to climb into, microscopes, and a garden. Children 12 and under get in free.

How to Do It

The museum sits at 1000 Oak Street, one block from the Lake Merritt BART station — it's genuinely walkable, and the station exit puts you directly on Oak Street. If you drive, the OMCA Garage is accessed from Oak Street and 12th Street; parking is $5/hour with an early-bird flat rate of $20 (in before 10am, out before 5pm). The garage opens late on Fridays in the April-October season (until 10pm), aligning with the museum's late Friday hours. ADA and families with strollers get dedicated parking on the garage's top level.

Enter via the main Oak Street entrance or the newer lakeside entrance at 12th Street facing Lake Merritt. For families with young kids, head directly to the Gallery of California Natural Sciences on Level 1 — the Nature Playspace is at the back of that floor. Plan to spend 45-60 minutes there, then work up through the History and Art galleries. The terraced gardens and outdoor lawn are free to access without museum admission, so a post-museum picnic on the grounds is a natural extension.

Tips & Tricks

Weekday afternoons are noticeably quieter than weekend mornings — the interactive stations in the Nature Playspace have zero wait during a Tuesday afternoon, versus a Saturday when you're sharing with multiple school groups and weekend families. If you're flexible, go mid-week.

The First Sundays program makes every first Sunday of the month free for general admission including special exhibitions. This is the best deal at the museum, but expect it to be one of the busier days. The Friday Nights at OMCA (5-9pm) bring Off the Grid food trucks to the plaza and create a festive market-style atmosphere that's worthwhile if your kids can handle an evening outing.

The OMCA garden is publicly accessible during museum hours with no admission required. The koi pond, lawn, and sculptures make this one of the better free outdoor spaces in downtown Oakland. The Town Fare Cafe on the mid-level has a kids' menu and a sundeck — you don't need a museum ticket to access the cafe. Sunday brunch at Town Fare draws a line; plan accordingly or go Friday or Saturday.

Backpacks must be worn on the front or carried like a briefcase in the galleries — staff will tell you, but it helps to know before you've loaded up a heavy pack. Strollers are welcome throughout. The museum has changing stations in all restroom levels including a gender-neutral restroom on Level 2.

The lava tube crawl and the redwood stump in the Natural Sciences gallery are the two things kids talk about afterward. Don't skip those by spending all your time at the first interactive station you hit.

Planning

General admission is $25 for adults (18-64), $22 for seniors (65+), $18 for youth 13-17, students, and educators with ID, and free for children 12 and under. Special exhibitions in the Great Hall are included in the all-inclusive ticket. EBT cardholders get in for $1. First Sundays are free for all. Museum hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 11am to 5pm, with Friday extended to 9pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday, and on major federal holidays including Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. The museum is located at 1000 Oak Street, Oakland, CA 94607. This works well year-round — it's indoor/outdoor in a way that lets you retreat inside on a cold day or spill out into the gardens on a warm one. Best for ages 2-8, with the sweet spot being 3-6 for the Nature Playspace. Buy tickets in advance at museumca.org — advance purchase is encouraged.
