Overview
Muir Woods holds the most accessible old-growth coastal redwood grove in the country — 1,000-year-old trees rising 250 feet, within 40 minutes of the Golden Gate Bridge. Cathedral Grove, the spiritual center of the park, is home to the first permanent quiet zone in the entire U.S. National Park System. The Main Trail follows Redwood Creek on a flat paved path and is fully stroller-accessible, which means you can bring a toddler and still get into the real forest without hiking a single hill.

How to Do It
Parking at Muir Woods is reservation-only via gomuirwoods.com — no walk-ups, no exceptions. Reserve your spot early: spaces open on a rolling 90-day basis and the most desirable morning windows sell out fast, often within hours of becoming available. Download your reservation before you leave home because there is no cell service at the park or on the winding roads leading to it. Drive Hwy 101 North from San Francisco, exit at Shoreline Highway/Hwy 1 toward Stinson Beach, then follow Muir Woods Road signs. The parking area is right at the trailhead at 1 Muir Woods Road, Mill Valley.

From the entrance plaza, walk the Main Trail straight ahead through Founder's Grove toward Cathedral Grove — this is the 1.5-mile loop that delivers the full experience. Turnaround at Bridge 2 for a 0.5-mile round trip with a toddler, Bridge 3 for 1 mile, or cross Bridge 4 and loop back on the Hillside Trail for a 2-mile loop with some elevation. Families with kids who want more can branch off at Founder's Grove onto the Canopy View Trail for a 3-mile moderate loop with 540 feet of gain — genuinely quiet up there on weekday mornings.
Tips & Tricks
Arrive at the earliest slot you can book, ideally 8 or 9 a.m. The park sees over a million visitors annually, and summer crowds between June and August are relentless by midday. September through October is the best balance of decent weather and thinner crowds; April to May works well before the summer surge. Weekday mornings in any season are dramatically calmer than weekend afternoons.
Bring layers even in summer. The redwood canyon is perpetually cool and damp because the same coastal fog that feeds these trees drops the temperature year-round. Shorts are a gamble. Closed-toe shoes are worth it too, since the dirt trails beyond the Main Trail can be muddy regardless of season.
Kids ages 5 to 12 can pick up a free Junior Ranger booklet at the Visitor Center and earn an official badge by completing tasks on the trail. It is surprisingly well-designed — actual observation prompts, not filler. The Visitor Center is open 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and rangers there give useful real-time trail condition updates.
Food is only permitted in designated areas before the forest or on the café patio — not on the trail itself. The Muir Woods Trading Company café sells decent hot drinks and snacks, but pack your own food if you have kids with specific needs. The park has no cell service or WiFi, so screenshots of your reservation, a downloaded map from the NPS app, and a paper backup are all worth having before you walk in.

Planning
Entrance is $15 per adult (age 16 and up) and free for children 15 and under. America the Beautiful Annual Pass holders enter free. Parking reservation is $10 for a standard vehicle, $30 for medium (17–22 feet), and $45 for large (22–35 feet). Reservations are required and purchased separately from entrance fees at gomuirwoods.com. Park hours are 9 a.m. to sunset.
Bring layers for every person — a light down or fleece jacket even in July. Closed-toe shoes are better than sandals on dirt trails. Pack snacks and water for the trail since eating inside the forest is not permitted. No pets allowed anywhere in the park. The flat Main Trail is stroller-accessible with a standard stroller; the Hillside Trail is manageable with a jogging stroller or carrier. The 2-mile Main Trail loop is appropriate from age 2 up. The Canopy View loop suits confident 5+ walkers. Late October through early November occasionally brings monarch butterflies to nearby Muir Beach, making a combo day worthwhile if timing aligns.
