Overview
The SF Zoo's holiday lights event — currently branded "Joy at SF Zoo" — runs evenings in December, transforming most of the zoo grounds with holiday lighting, a village of illuminated houses, and seasonal programming. It's one of the more manageable holiday light events in the Bay Area: contained, stroller-friendly, and completable in two hours without the sensory overload of larger productions. Animals are viewable (some inside their enclosures, some out depending on conditions), which distinguishes it from a pure light show. The Little Puffer train runs during the event, which is the highlight for kids under 5.

How to Do It
The zoo is at Sloat Boulevard and the Great Highway in the Outer Sunset. Driving in from the East Bay or South Bay, enter via the Great Highway parking lot off Sloat at 47th Avenue. This lot costs $8 and fills steadily but is rarely at capacity for evening events on weekdays. Free street parking is available along Sloat Boulevard west of the zoo — it's a legitimate option and a short walk. Rideshare drop-off and pickup is also at 47th and Sloat. If you're taking Muni, the L-Taraval line stops at the zoo and presenting proof of payment gets you $1 off zoo admission — a minor perk but useful. The main entrance is on Sloat; once inside, the event starts at the Entry Village and runs through to the Elinor Friend Playground. Take the Little Puffer train early in the evening when lines are shortest, then meander through the light displays and animal areas. The event tent near the Playfield Lawn has hot apple cider and cocoa. Plan to end at the playground, which is illuminated and gives kids a chance to move.
Tips & Tricks
Weeknight visits are noticeably less crowded than weekends, particularly the December weekdays in the run-up to the holiday break. If you can go Tuesday through Thursday, the event feels spacious. Bundle up without negotiation — the Outer Sunset runs 10 to 15 degrees colder than the rest of San Francisco, and with fog, the real-feel temperature after 6pm in December is typically in the low 40s. Multiple layers, hats, and gloves for kids are not optional. The Little Puffer train is a hit with young kids (under 5 especially) and worth prioritizing before lines form. The scavenger hunt element — spotting holiday-decorated elves hidden around the zoo — keeps older kids (4+) engaged across the full walk rather than rushing through. The event runs 5pm to 8pm on its scheduled evenings, so a 5pm arrival gives you the most flexibility to eat dinner at the Leaping Lemur Cafe on site before the crowds arrive for food. Admission is separate from standard daytime zoo admission — buying tickets online in advance is reliable and avoids any gate uncertainty.

Planning
Joy at SF Zoo runs select evenings in mid-to-late December, typically December 19–23 and December 26–30 from 5pm to 8pm (verify exact dates each year on sfzoo.org). Tickets: Members free; adults approximately $7; kids ages 4–14 approximately $5; kids 3 and under free. Parking in the zoo lot is $8. Tickets can be purchased online through the SF Zoo website. The event typically does not require advance reservations but selling out is possible on peak nights (December 23 especially). What to bring: warm layers including hats and gloves, a stroller if you have a young toddler (the paths are paved), and cash or a card for the Leaping Lemur Cafe and the gift shop. This works well for ages 1 through 8 — the youngest enjoy the lights and Little Puffer, and the older ages engage with the animal viewing and scavenger hunt. December is the only window; the event does not run in November or January.
