Happy Hollow Park & Zoo

Happy Hollow has operated since 1961 on 16 acres in Kelley Park, combining an AZA-accredited zoo with vintage-scale amusement park rides and one of California's oldest puppet theaters. The zoo section holds over 140 animals — jaguars, giant anteaters, meerkats, capybaras, and lemurs at near eye-level proximity. The rides run entirely on a low-thrill model with no height requirement for the youngest kids on the Granny Bugs and Mini Putt-Putt cars; even the roller coaster (Pacific Fruit Express) has a 36-inch minimum with an adult escort. One ticket covers everything: all rides, both zoo sections, playgrounds, and puppet theater shows.

How to Do It

Main parking is at 748 Story Road (across the Bent Bridge from the Entry Plaza), $10 per car by credit, debit, or cash. Arrive early to get shaded spots — the lot bakes in summer sun by midday. An overflow lot is at 1300 Senter Road at the Leininger Center, $6–$8 cash only, a short walk to the entrance. VTA bus service reaches the park; plan via vta.org. Admissions and membership sales close 30 minutes before park closing.

The park layout rewards starting with the zoo first, before the midday heat and before the youngest kids run out of gas. The animal exhibits in the lower and upper zoo sections are immersive for ages 2–8 — small enough that nothing feels rushed, large enough that you're not done in 20 minutes. From there, move to the rides in the center of the park. The puppet theater runs scheduled shows throughout the day; check the posted schedule at the entrance and plan a ride sequence around the next show time.

Tips & Tricks

The Danny the Dragon train and Keep-Around Carousel are both rated "low thrill" and have no minimum height requirement with an adult escort — these are the rides for under-3s and hesitant first-timers. Both are ADA accessible. The Granny Bugs (small spinning insects) and Mini Putt-Putt cars are children-only, no minimum height, and are exactly calibrated for 2- and 3-year-olds who want a ride but aren't ready for anything with motion.

The puppet theater is genuinely good — Happy Hollow puppeteers build their own puppets and sets and perform a mix of classic fairytales and original shows. The stage is only a few feet from the audience, which makes it immersive for kids in the 2–6 range. Check the day's show schedule first thing when you enter. Shows fill the small theater; arriving a few minutes early gets you a front-row floor spot for the kids.

Stroller and wheelchair rentals are available at the Explore & More store inside the park. If you're coming from the East Bay, it's worth throwing the stroller in the car anyway — the terrain is stroller-friendly and the distances are manageable, but a tired 2-year-old on the walk back to the lot is its own challenge.

July and August in San Jose can be genuinely hot. Happy Hollow has shade trees throughout, but the park is outdoors. Start at open (10 a.m.) and plan to leave by early afternoon. Spring (March through May) is the best weather window: mild temperatures, full programming, and lighter crowds than summer. January tends to be slower and some days close early — call ahead or check happyhollow.org before a January or December visit.

Planning

General admission is $22 for ages 2–59, free for under 2. Seniors (60+) and military pay $19. Reciprocal members and membership guests pay $11. Groups of 14 or more pay $14 per person (February through August rate). Parking is $10 at the main lot (748 Story Rd) or $6–$8 cash at the Leininger Center overflow lot (1300 Senter Rd). An $80 annual parking pass pays off after 8 visits.

Hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (extended some weekends). No advance ticket reservation required for general admission — buy online to save time at the gate or purchase in person. Bring sunscreen, water, layers for March–May and October–November mornings, and snacks (picnic tables and a food concession are both available). The park works for ages 1–8, with the sweet spot at 2–6 where every element — rides, zoo, puppet show, and playgrounds — is pitched directly at that age range.
