Ferry Building Farmers Market

The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 8am to 2pm around the Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street — over 100 vendors, direct-from-farm produce, and a concentration of prepared food that makes it genuinely worth arriving hungry. For families with young kids, the real draw is the combination of sample culture (almost every produce vendor hands food to kids), open waterfront space to move around, and the F-line streetcar rolling by on the Embarcadero. It's year-round, rain or shine, and it's one of the few Saturday morning activities in SF where the destination itself is the entertainment.

How to Do It

The easiest approach is BART to Embarcadero Station, which puts you one block from the market — exit onto the Embarcadero and the Ferry Building is straight ahead. If you're driving, the Golden Gateway Garage at 250 Clay Street (between Battery and Davis) is the best Saturday option: open 7am to 7pm, flat rate of $10 all day, no validation required. Embarcadero Center 4 Parking Lot at 4 Embarcadero Center is $2 for up to 4 hours with validation at the Foodwise Info Booth. Street parking on Saturday is possible but tight. Strollers move fine on the market's outdoor pathways — the market wraps around the exterior of the Ferry Building. Inside the building itself, restrooms and an ATM are on the ground floor at both ends. The Veggie Valet service (curbside, south of the clocktower) lets you stash purchases and shop hands-free from 8am to 1pm, which is genuinely useful with young kids in tow. Plan to move: start on the north side of the building where many produce vendors cluster, work your way south toward the prepared food vendors, then eat breakfast on the waterfront steps or along the promenade.

Tips & Tricks

Get there between 8 and 9am. By 10am the prepared food lines are long and the produce vendors are depleted of their best stuff. The most popular vendors — Acme Bread, Frog Hollow Farm fruit, Dirty Girl Produce — sell through quickly on peak summer Saturdays. If your kid is old enough to eat solid food, the sample culture alone makes this worthwhile: stone fruit, strawberries, persimmons, cheese, honey. Staff at most vendors actively offer samples to kids.

Most vendors accept credit cards and contactless payments. Look for the "We Take Credit Cards" signs. If you want to use cash across every vendor, pick up wooden market coins at the Foodwise Info Booth (green tent) — they work at any stall and save you from running to the ATM mid-market.

The Foodwise Classroom runs free Saturday cooking demos and seasonal food education events at the orange Seasonal Spotlight tent, usually starting around 10am. If you have a curious 4+ year old, this is worth checking — it's short, interactive, and free. Check the Foodwise events calendar before you go to see what's running.

Note that dogs are not permitted in the certified farmers market area per California Health & Safety Code, with the exception of service animals. This is strictly enforced. Leave the dog home or plan a drop-off point outside the market perimeter.

One underused move: after the market, walk north along the Embarcadero to Sue Birman Playground at 100 Washington Street at Drumm — a five-minute walk with a boat-themed structure kids love. It's free, uncrowded early on Saturday mornings, and lets kids burn off energy before the drive home.

Planning

Admission is free. Saturday market hours are 8am to 2pm, year-round. Tuesday and Thursday markets (10am to 2pm) are smaller and less crowded — better for a quick produce run but not the same full experience. No reservations needed. Bring a reusable bag or two; the Foodwise tote bags are available at the Info Booth for purchase. Dress in layers — the Embarcadero is exposed and often windy even on sunny mornings; by 10am it usually warms up. Budget $20-50 for a family depending on whether you buy produce and a prepared breakfast. Best year-round, but peak stone fruit season (June through August) and citrus/root vegetable season (November through February) are particularly strong for produce. All ages work, though babies in carriers or strollers and kids ages 2-7 get the most sensory engagement from the sampling and food watching.
