Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose

The Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose — the large purple building at 180 Woz Way — is one of the strongest children's museums in the Bay Area, covering three floors of hands-on exhibits in a 52,000-square-foot space. The crown jewel is WaterWays, a massive network of water-filled tubes where kids direct colored balls through currents and vortexes — it reliably holds children for 30+ minutes. The street-themed section, with a functioning pizza kitchen, a retired VTA bus kids can "drive," and a city market, is the other anchor that makes this worth a full morning.

How to Do It

From I-280 (either direction), exit Bird Avenue, turn onto Auzerais, and then right on Woz Way. Two parking lots sit directly adjacent to the museum: the Woz Way lot and the Auzerais lot. The Woz Way lot has machines that take $1 and $5 bills and accept Visa and Mastercard; the Auzerais lot has an attendant and takes cash, debit, and all major credit cards. Parking starts at $7. If you're coming by transit, VTA Light Rail's Alum Rock-Santa Teresa line stops at the Children's Discovery Museum station, which is steps from the front entrance — this is the cleanest option on busy weekend days when the lots fill up. Enter through the main entrance off Woz Way, pay at the front desk (no advance reservation needed), and head upstairs first to WaterWays before the crowds build. Once kids have had their fill of water play, work down through the street section on the ground floor. The Bill's Backyard outdoor area is the place for snacks and a breather.

Tips & Tricks

Pack a full change of clothes — at minimum — for WaterWays. The exhibit has smocks available but kids will find ways to get thoroughly wet regardless. If you show up without a dry backup, you'll be leaving early. Plan for it and it becomes one of the best exhibits in the museum.

The Woz Way parking lot fills faster than the Auzerais lot. On weekend mornings, go straight to Auzerais. Alternatively, the VTA light rail eliminates parking stress entirely and the Convention Center station is equally close to the entrance.

Weekday mornings are significantly quieter than weekends. Tuesday through Friday from 9:30am to 1pm (current hours) means smaller crowds in every exhibit. If you have a flexible schedule, a weekday visit is a different experience than Saturday at noon.

The toddler-specific section (the Wonder Cabinet area) is tucked toward the back of the ground floor. It's calmer, has age-appropriate sensory play, and is a good reset zone when a younger sibling needs a break from the intensity of the main exhibits. It gets overlooked because families beeline to WaterWays first.

The museum participates in reciprocal admission programs through the Association of Children's Museums (ACM) network. If you have a membership at another Bay Area children's museum, check whether it grants discounted entry here before buying full-price tickets.

Snacks are allowed in the Bill's Backyard outdoor area only — no food inside the exhibits. The outdoor area has picnic tables and trash cans. There is no on-site café, so bring something or plan to hit a spot in downtown San Jose after.

Planning

Admission is $18 per person for adults and children; infants under 1 are free. With an EBT/SNAP/CalFresh card and valid photo ID, admission drops to $5 per person for up to four people. Hours are Tuesday through Friday 9:30am to 1pm, and Saturday through Sunday 9:30am to 4:30pm; the museum is closed Mondays. No reservations required — walk-in only. Bring a change of clothes (or two) specifically for WaterWays, refillable water bottles, and snacks for the outdoor break area. The museum is entirely indoor and climate-controlled, making it a reliable rainy day anchor year-round. All ages from infant up get something from this museum, but kids ages 2 through 6 are in the sweet spot — old enough to engage with the interactive exhibits, young enough to still be fully captured by the pretend play.
