Children's Creativity Museum

The Children's Creativity Museum at 221 4th Street in Yerba Buena Gardens is built around making, not looking — kids leave with a stop-motion animation film, a music track, a built structure, or a sculpture rather than memories of things behind glass. The Animation Studio is the flagship exhibit: kids storyboard, choose props (LEGO, clay, their own drawings), set up a scene under a camera, and capture frames to build a short film that gets emailed home. Two floors of multimedia exhibits, Thursday through Sunday only. The 1906 carousel outside in Yerba Buena Gardens is a separate $4 ride and a strong finisher for the day.

How to Do It

The museum is at 221 4th Street, San Francisco, CA 94103 — in Yerba Buena Gardens between Mission and Howard Streets, one block from Moscone Center. The closest parking garages are the Fifth & Mission Garage (833 Mission St) and the Moscone Garage (255 3rd St), both a short walk away; expect to pay $20–$35 for a full visit. By transit, BART to Powell Street Station is a 7-minute walk. The museum is open Thursday through Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm. Two floors of exhibits are connected by elevator and stairs. When you arrive, check in at the front desk for any time-slot requirements on the Animation Studio — it is the most popular exhibit and can have a wait if you arrive mid-morning on a weekend. A good visit order: start in the Animation Studio while kids are fresh and patient, then rotate through Making Music Studio, the Mystery Box Challenge, and Waterways. Save the carousel for the end as a reward. The Lil' Critter City play space is designed for ages 3 and under and works well as a quieter zone if you have a toddler alongside an older child.

Tips & Tricks

Arrive as close to opening (10 am) as possible on weekends — the Animation Studio has camera stations that fill up, and kids who get there early can run a full animation cycle without waiting. The facilitators in the Animation Studio are trained and actively helpful — they guide kids through storyboarding and frame capture, so don't rush that exhibit; it rewards time. The completed animation gets emailed to you directly from the studio, which means no managing a USB drive or physical souvenir to lose. Each ticket includes all-day access with same-day re-entry, so you can step out into Yerba Buena Gardens for lunch and come back — the outdoor gardens have grassy areas and the carousel. The museum is small enough that you will cover everything in 2 hours; don't overbuild the day around it. Kids over 5 get the most from the Animation Studio, Making Music Studio, and Mystery Box Challenge; kids 2–4 are better served by Lil' Critter City and Waterways. Strollers are accommodated but the exhibits are hands-on and floor-level, so you'll be parking the stroller frequently.

Planning

Admission: $20 per person for everyone age 1 and up; children under 1 are free. Members get in free — a family membership pays off in two visits. EBT cardholders qualify for the Museums for All discount (present a physical benefits card with photo ID). Hours: Thursday through Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm; closed Monday through Wednesday. No advance reservation required for general admission, though it's worth checking the website for school group schedules that can affect weekday crowds. Each ticket includes same-day re-entry. The museum is at 221 4th Street — street parking is metered and turns over fast; budget for garage parking rather than circling. Bring layers for the walk between BART and the museum (SoMa is often windy). No food is sold inside the museum — eat before or plan to step out to Yerba Buena Gardens or the surrounding neighborhood for lunch. Best for ages 2 through 8; the sweet spot for the full exhibit range is 5–8. Year-round destination with no seasonal variation — this is the go-to for a rainy SF day when outdoor options are closed.
