Mission Peak Regional Preserve (Lower Trails)

Mission Peak Regional Preserve's lower trails through open grassland are one of the East Bay's most distinctive family hikes — rolling hills dotted with free-ranging cattle, raptors overhead, and spring wildflower displays that carpet the slopes in February through April. The park gets hyped almost exclusively as a summit hike (brutal — skip it with kids under 12), but the lower 1 to 2 miles out of either trailhead deliver everything interesting about Mission Peak: the big views, the cows, the wildlife, the sense of open wilderness. This is genuine hiking, not a nature walk — uneven terrain, exposed sun, and real elevation gain even on the lower sections.

How to Do It

Two trailheads access the preserve. The Ohlone College trailhead (43600 Mission Blvd, Fremont) is the better choice for families: over 900 parking spaces, a more gradual ascent, some shade in the lower sections, and portable toilets at the trailhead. Parking costs $4 on weekdays and paid Saturdays; the lot is free on Sundays. Vending machines in the lot accept cash or card. The Stanford Avenue Staging Area (east end of Stanford Avenue) has only 43 parking spaces and a steeper, more exposed climb — it fills before 8 am on spring weekends and the parking permit program now restricts some spaces to area residents. For a family outing focused on the lower trails, start at Ohlone College, pick up the Peak Trail heading into the preserve, and hike out 1 to 1.5 miles before turning around. You'll gain elevation quickly but the views open up within the first half mile. Cattle graze throughout the lower grasslands; stay on the marked trail, give them space, and keep kids close when passing near cows with calves. There is no access to the park from Mill Creek Road.

Tips & Tricks

Go early — not as a nice idea, but as a firm rule. The Stanford Avenue lot is full by 8 am on spring weekends, and even the Ohlone lot fills by 9 am on busy days. A 7:30 am start gets you parking, cooler temps, and the trail largely to yourself before the midmorning surge. The trail is completely exposed to the sun above the first quarter mile — kids will overheat faster than you expect on warm days, and the open grassland amplifies the heat. Bring at least 2 liters of water per adult and 1 liter per child regardless of the forecast. Spring wildflower season (mid-February through April) transforms the hillsides and is genuinely worth timing a visit around — blue lupine, California poppies, and owl's clover bloom in the lower grasslands. The cattle are not fenced; teach kids before the hike to walk calmly past them, not to run, and never to approach a calf. Hawks and turkey vultures ride the thermals above the preserve year-round and are easy to spot from open sections of the trail.

Planning

The preserve is free to enter. Parking at Ohlone College is $4 (cash or card, no coins required — vending machines on site). The Ohlone lot is open daily, year-round from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm. Stanford Avenue lot hours vary by season: 6:30 am to 8:00 pm December 23 through March 31; 6:30 am to 9:00 pm April 1 through December 22. Hours are strictly enforced — being inside the park after close results in a minimum $300 citation. Bring: trail runners or hiking shoes with grip (the grass can be slippery when dry), sun hat for every person, sunscreen, 2+ liters of water per adult, snacks, and a light layer for early starts. No dogs allowed at Mission Peak (the rule is actively enforced). Best months are February through April for wildflowers and green hills, and October through November for cooler temps and golden grass. Avoid May through September — the trail becomes hot, dry, and dusty, and afternoon heat on the exposed grassland is genuinely dangerous. Best for kids 5 and up who are comfortable on uneven terrain and can hike 2 to 3 miles without being carried.
