Overview
San Francisco's cable cars are the last manually operated ones in the world, and watching the grip operator work the lever mechanism is genuinely interesting for kids who are into how things work. There are three lines: Powell-Hyde, Powell-Mason, and California Street. The Powell-Hyde line is the most scenic — it climbs Russian Hill, crests at the top of Lombard Street, and drops you at the Hyde & Beach turnaround next to Aquatic Park and Ghirardelli Square. The Powell-Mason line is slightly less crowded for nearly the same experience, terminating at Bay and Taylor streets near Fisherman's Wharf. Both are worth doing; if you have to pick one, Powell-Hyde for views, Powell-Mason for a shorter wait.

How to Do It
The main turnaround at Powell & Market (accessible via Powell Street BART) is the tourist entry point and has the longest lines — often 45–60 minutes on weekends. The smarter move: walk two to four blocks north up Powell Street and board mid-route at Powell & Sutter or Powell & Bush. The operator saves standing-room spots for mid-route boarders, so you'll get on the next car rather than waiting through the full queue. If you prefer a seat, the line is your only option — seats go to riders who board at the turnaround. Children age 4 and under ride free; everyone else pays $9 per ride (as of 2025). No transfers — each boarding is a separate fare. Pay with cash, a Clipper card, or the MuniMobile app. The 1-Day Visitor Passport ($25 adult, $13 child) covers unlimited cable car rides plus all Muni lines and is worthwhile if you're doing two or more rides in a day.

Facing east (toward the Embarcadero side) on the Powell-Mason line gives you views of Coit Tower, Chinatown rooftops, and the TransAmerica Pyramid as you climb. On Powell-Hyde, hang on the outside running board with kids and you'll get the full city-over-the-hill panorama — just keep a firm grip on the vertical poles. The ride from Powell & Market to the Wharf takes about 15 minutes each direction.
Tips & Tricks
The California Street line (running east-west through Nob Hill) is almost always overlooked by tourists and has essentially no wait. It doesn't go to the Wharf, but the Nob Hill crossing is steep, the views are great, and it's a much more authentic experience. Board at California & Drumm near the Embarcadero and ride it all the way to Van Ness. Works well as a warm-up ride before tackling the Powell lines.
Kids who board the Powell-Hyde car at the Hyde & Beach turnaround (the Wharf end) can watch the cable car be manually turned on the turnaround plate — the crew physically pushes the car 180 degrees on a rotating disk, which is one of those things that stops kids cold. Plan to be at the turnaround 5–10 minutes before departure to catch it.
SF fog is thickest in summer (June–August), especially mornings. The hills on the Powell-Hyde line can be genuinely cold and windy. Bring a light layer even if it's warm downtown — the temperature drops fast once you start climbing. September and October are the warmest, clearest months for this ride.
Don't try to take a stroller. The cars are standing-only for a lot of riders, the platforms are narrow, and you'll be asked to fold it. A carrier or front pack works fine for infants; kids who can hold on to a pole independently (typically 4+) are the prime demographic.
Planning
Fares: $9/ride per person (ages 5 and up); ages 4 and under free. 1-Day Visitor Passport: approximately $25 adult, $13 child — covers unlimited cable car, Muni, and historic streetcar rides. Available at SFMTA fare machines at the Powell & Market turnaround or via the MuniMobile app. Operating hours: approximately 6am–midnight daily, though schedules vary by line; check sfmta.com for current timetables. Best time to go: mid-morning on weekdays or right at 9am on weekends before tourist crowds build. Summer weekends between noon and 4pm have the longest waits at Powell & Market — avoid that window or board mid-route. No strollers. The whole ride one-way takes 15–20 minutes; plan for the turnaround spectacle at either end and you're looking at a 45–60 minute total outing including wait time.
