Brentwood U-Pick Farms

Brentwood, in far eastern Contra Costa County, is the Bay Area's u-pick capital — 65+ farms on a dedicated farm trail, all within a few miles of each other. Cherry season runs May through mid-June; peaches and nectarines take over in July; corn, tomatoes, and pluots carry into August. The draw isn't just the proximity of options but the quality — cherries picked off the tree that morning taste nothing like the refrigerated ones at the grocery store, and kids who've never experienced that tend to remember it. Dwelley Family Farms is the only certified organic u-pick operation in the area, with two orchard locations (TK's Ranch and Suzuki) growing Royal Tioga and other varieties. For a broader selection of fruit types and a built-in playground and weekend food trucks, Farmer's Daughter Produce is a strong alternative with a more festival-like atmosphere.

How to Do It

From the East Bay, take Highway 4 east toward Brentwood — it's about 45 minutes from Oakland, 60 from SF on a clear day. For Dwelley TK's Ranch (1454 Walnut Blvd), stay on Highway 4 past the Brentwood city center and continue on Marsh Creek Road; the u-pick parking entrance is on your right just after Walnut Avenue — not the front driveway, the secondary entrance on Marsh Creek Road. For Dwelley Suzuki (2475 Concord Ave), exit Highway 4 at Balfour Road (exit 35), turn left on Balfour, right on Fairview, then right on Concord — Suzuki is on your left in about half a mile. Parking at both is free and on-site. Check harvestforyou.com or Dwelley's Instagram before you go — farms update their status daily based on ripeness and weather. The Harvest Time website (harvestforyou.com) has an interactive map of all 65+ farms with current crop status.

Most farms open at 8am on weekends. Get there by 8:30am at the latest — cherries in particular get picked over fast, and the most accessible fruit on the lower branches is gone by mid-morning. Check in at the entrance tent, pay the entry fee (Dwelley charges $5 per person, credited toward your purchase), grab bags, and head into the orchard.

Tips & Tricks

Bring cash. A significant number of Brentwood farms are cash-only, and the nearest ATM can be 15 minutes away. Dwelley accepts cards and mobile payments, but don't count on that being true across the board. Pull $40–$60 before you leave the Bay.

Cherry picking with toddlers works better than you'd expect — most of the fruit at Dwelley's orchards hangs low enough for a 3-year-old to reach without climbing. Give each kid their own small container rather than one big shared bucket; it gives them ownership over what they picked and prevents the inevitable argument over who picked more.

Brentwood gets genuinely hot from late May onward. Temperatures regularly hit 95–100°F by noon in July and August. For peach season, arrive at 8am, pick hard for 90 minutes, and be back in the car by 10:30. For cherry season in May, the heat is more manageable, but a hat and sunscreen are still non-negotiable. Wear clothes you don't mind staining — cherry juice is unforgiving.

The farms closest to the Highway 4 exit fill fastest. If one lot looks packed when you arrive, keep driving down Marsh Creek Road toward the next farm rather than circling for parking. Most farms on the trail are within a half-mile of each other. Airaya U-Pick Farm (25221 Marsh Creek Rd) is a solid backup option for cherries with slightly different hours — open Mon–Fri 9am–2pm, weekends 8am–5pm.

After picking, Orchard Park (40 Griffith Lane, Brentwood) has shaded picnic areas and a playground — ideal for the post-farm lunch before the drive home. The Brentwood Family Aquatic Complex at Veterans Park (3841 Balfour Rd) is also right there if kids need to blow off energy in the water.

Planning

Dwelley Family Farms: $5/person entry fee (refunded toward your purchase); certified organic cherries at approximately $5.50/lb; Saturdays and Sundays 8am–5pm (parking lot closes at 4pm). Airaya U-Pick: Mon–Fri 9am–2pm, Sat–Sun 8am–5pm. Farmer's Daughter Produce: weekend food trucks and playground on-site. Season timing: cherries mid-May to mid-June, peaches and nectarines July, corn and tomatoes August. No strollers — the orchard ground is uneven dirt and gravel. Ages 2 and up can participate and genuinely enjoy it. Best months are May and July; the Memorial Day weekend cherry rush and Fourth of July week are the two peak crowd periods — go a week before or after both. Download the Harvest Time farm map (harvestforyou.com) before you go — the PDF has all farm locations, crops, and current-season notes.
