Berkeley Playhouse

Berkeley Playhouse operates out of the Julia Morgan Theater at 2640 College Avenue — a 1908 Arts and Crafts building that is genuinely beautiful and nothing like a converted school auditorium. The productions are full-scale musicals with professional-quality direction and design, not stripped-down children's shows. The 2025/26 season included shows like Into the Woods and Cats alongside the YouthStage youth program productions. For a kid who has been to a few performances and knows how to sit for 90 minutes, this is the place that will actually impress them rather than just occupy them.

How to Do It

The theater is at the intersection of College Avenue and Derby Street in South Berkeley, about a 5-minute drive or 20-minute walk from the UC Berkeley campus. From Highway 24 eastbound through the Caldecott Tunnel, take CA-13 North (Tunnel Road), which turns into Ashby Avenue; turn right on College Avenue and the theater is on the left just past Derby Street.

Street parking on College Avenue is 2-hour limited before 7pm Monday through Saturday, which means it works fine for evening shows (7pm curtain means parking opens up right as you arrive) but is tight for Saturday matinees. For Saturday afternoon shows, target the residential streets one or two blocks east of College — Ellsworth, Hillegass, or Bowditch — where parking is unregulated. The side street directly behind the theater sometimes has open spots with a short walk up the side path to the entrance. Box office opens one hour before curtain; arrive 20 minutes early to settle in without rushing.

Tips & Tricks

The Julia Morgan Theater is intimate — there are no bad seats. The mid-orchestra section fills first; if you're buying last-minute or want more flexibility, the side sections still have strong sightlines and you won't feel like you're at the edge.

Berkeley Playhouse has an Under-30 ticket tier priced around $34 for anyone ages 4 to 29, which makes this genuinely affordable for a family compared to the adult full-price range of $39 to $55. Value seats at $19 are also available for most performances and are intended for families with budget constraints — no documentation required. Preview performances at $29 are a strong option for most shows since the production is essentially finished.

If your kid hasn't been to live theater before, start with a lighter show (something comedic or familiar) rather than dropping them into a 2.5-hour dramatic musical. Check the season listing at berkeleyplayhouse.org to match the show to your kid's maturity level. The theater has a guide specifically designed for first-time young audiences.

The YouthStage productions — student-cast shows produced through the theater's education program — are worth considering independently. They run on a different schedule and ticket prices are lower, but the production quality is high enough that adult audiences find them genuinely engaging.

Planning

Ticket prices range from $19 (Value seats) to $55 depending on the performance day and section. Under-30 tickets (ages 4–29) are $34 for most shows. Preview performances are $29. There is a $3.95 vendor fee per ticket when buying online. Season passes are available if you plan to attend multiple shows.

The box office phone line is 510-845-8542 x351, open Wednesday through Friday 11am to 4pm. The in-person box office opens one hour before curtain. Shows typically run 90 to 120 minutes including intermission.

The season runs September through June; the summer gap is when youth classes and camps take over. Check the website in August for the upcoming season announcement. Bring nothing in particular — the venue handles everything, and the experience is entirely self-contained. Children under 3 are generally not admitted; age 4 is the realistic floor, but kids who sit well for books and TV can handle it by 3.5. The strongest engagement tends to be ages 5 to 8, particularly for kids already interested in music or performing.
