Overview
The San Francisco Bay Trail is a 500-mile paved network ringing the entire bay, and most family-accessible segments are flat, car-free, and wide enough for a bike trailer alongside a kid on a balance bike or tag-along. This is not one activity but a framework: pick a segment, pick a destination endpoint, and go. The best segments for families with young kids each have something at the far end worth riding to — beach, playground, cafe — so the route has a purpose beyond the ride itself.

How to Do It
The four go-to family segments, each distinct in character:
Crown Beach, Alameda is the strongest all-around pick for families with kids under 6. Park at the South Shore Shopping Center near the intersection of Park St. and Shoreline Drive (free), or pay $5 at the Crown Beach parking lot itself. Ride west along the paved Bay Trail with views of the SF skyline. Crown Memorial State Beach has shallow, calm, wave-free water that stays warmer than the ocean — kids can wade hundreds of feet out without it getting deep. Bring a towel and plan on a beach session at the turnaround. The full loop is about 4.8 miles, flat the entire way.
Crissy Field, San Francisco runs from the Marina Green west to Fort Point at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. Park in the Marina Green lots on Marina Blvd. or in the Fort Mason area. The paved path is flat and protected from traffic; the Warming Hut at the west end serves coffee, snacks, and park gear and is a natural turnaround point. Round trip to the Warming Hut and back is roughly 3 miles. The bridge views from this segment are the best of any Bay Trail stretch.

Mountain View Shoreline offers a flat loop around Shoreline Lake in a 700-acre park. Start at the boathouse parking lot off Shoreline Blvd. — free parking with good facilities including restrooms and a cafe at the boathouse. The lake loop is 1.4 miles; extend it to connect with the Bay Trail for a longer route. The park has a playground structure near the boat launch area. Calmer and less crowded than Crissy Field on weekends.
Richmond/Berkeley Marina Bay Trail connects Crockett through Richmond to Emeryville past the Berkeley and Richmond marinas, with clear-day views of Alcatraz, Angel Island, and San Francisco. Start at the Richmond Marina Bay parking lot or the Berkeley Marina parking lots — both free. The Eastshore State Park section through Emeryville has some of the best flat paved trail in the East Bay.
Tips & Tricks
Afternoon wind is the main operational variable on every one of these segments. By 2–3PM on warm days, the bay wind picks up significantly and turns a relaxed ride into a slog for small kids on tag-alongs or balance bikes. Plan to start between 9–11AM and be done by early afternoon. Wind also affects trailers — a rear-mounted trailer in a strong headwind adds real drag.
Crown Beach fills up on hot summer weekends and the $5 parking lot can be maxed out by 10AM. The South Shore Shopping Center lot is the workaround — it's a 10-minute ride to the beach path from there and consistently has space. Crissy Field lots on the west end of Marina Blvd. fill faster than the eastern lots near Fort Mason; try the Fort Mason side if you arrive after 10AM on a weekend.
Tag-alongs (the half-bike that attaches to an adult's rear axle) are the right tool for kids ages 4–7 who can pedal but not keep pace. Trailers work for ages 0–5 and let you bring a toddler along while older kids ride their own bikes. If your kid is on their own bike, the rule of thumb is: can they handle 30 minutes on their own without stopping? If yes, any of these segments works.
Helmets are not optional. Bring more water than you think you need — bay riding in sun is deceptive for hydration. A small handlebar bag with snacks and a spare tube is good kit even on casual rides.
Planning
All segments are free with free or low-cost parking (Crown Beach charges $5 at the beach lot). No reservations, no tickets. Best months are March through October; summer mornings are ideal. Avoid November through February on exposed segments where wind and rain combine — the Shoreline Mountain View loop is the most sheltered. The Crown Beach route is accessible year-round on calm days. For kids under 3, trailers are the mode and any segment works at whatever pace the adult sets. Kids 3–5 on balance bikes can handle Crown Beach and Crissy Field (1–2 miles max on their own). Kids 5–8 on pedal bikes can do full segments. Bring sunscreen, layers for bay wind, water, snacks, and a plan for what you'll do at the endpoint — the ride is better when there's something to arrive at.
