Aquatic Park Berkeley (Kayak & Sailing)

Berkeley Aquatic Park is a 100-acre lagoon park that connects to San Francisco Bay, offering flat, protected water that's significantly more manageable for families than open bay kayaking. The mile-long lagoon is ringed by walking and biking trails, a solid playground, and wetlands — making it a layered outing where kids can be on the water, then move to land without driving anywhere. The Cal Sailing Club runs free Open House sails from the marina end roughly monthly from April through October, which is one of the only places in the Bay Area you can put your kids on a sailboat for zero dollars.

How to Do It

The park entrance is at 80 Bolivar Drive, Berkeley, 94710. From I-80, take the University Avenue exit west and continue past the freeway frontage road into the marina area; Aquatic Park sits just south of the Berkeley Marina proper. Parking is free and plentiful in the lots off Bolivar Drive. The park is also served by AC Transit.

For kayaking, the UC Aquatic Center at 124 University Avenue (at the Berkeley Marina, just north of the park's lagoon) offers kayak and SUP rentals for non-students by appointment during open boating hours — call their seasonal hotline at 510-642-7707 for current hours and availability since the center is closed November through late March. Reservations are required online in advance. For the free sailing option, the Cal Sailing Club is at the same 124 University Avenue address; Open Houses run 1–3pm on designated Sunday afternoons (sometimes Saturday). Sign in at the table at 1pm — it's first-come, first-served. Kids must be at least 5 years old and accompanied by an adult.

Once on foot inside the park, start at Dreamland Playground on the east side — wooden castles, towers, bridges, and slides nestled under trees with lagoon views. The 2.3-mile accessible loop trail circles the lagoon and connects via a pedestrian bridge over I-80 to McLaughlin Eastshore State Park and the Bay Trail. The west end of the lagoon faces the bay and gets better wind for watching sail activity.

Tips & Tricks

The Cal Sailing Club's free Open Houses are genuinely one of the best underpublicized family activities in the East Bay. Kids ride on stable keelboats rather than dinghies — volunteer skippers are safety-trained and the club provides life jackets. Bring shoes that can get wet and a windbreaker; they also have foulies (rain jackets) to borrow. Check cal-sailing.org for the year's schedule before making plans since dates cluster around specific Sundays.

Swimming and fishing are prohibited in the lagoon at all times — the water mixes bay tidal water with stormwater runoff and is monitored weekly for bacteria. The city posts advisory signs when levels exceed standards; check the Berkeley Parks page before visiting if your kids are inclined to wade. Paddling and rowing remain allowed even during water quality advisories.

The park hours are 6am to 10pm. The west end of the lagoon, past the pedestrian bridge, offers the best bird watching — great blue herons nest in the wetlands, and the area around the bay-facing edge of the park tends to be quieter and less trafficked. Bring binoculars if you have them.

The adjacent Berkeley Marina and César Chávez Park are a short walk across the pedestrian bridge, giving you easy access to an additional 90 acres of open lawn and bay views if the kids still have energy after the lagoon. César Chávez is particularly good for kite flying given consistent bay winds.

Planning

Aquatic Park itself is free to enter. UC Aquatic Center kayak and SUP rentals for non-students are priced by appointment — contact recwell.berkeley.edu for current non-student rates. Cal Sailing Club Open Houses are completely free; children under 5 are not permitted on the sailboats. Park hours are 6am–10pm daily.

Bring layers — the marina end of the park can be 10–15 degrees cooler than inland Berkeley on summer afternoons when afternoon winds come in off the bay. Bring sunscreen, water, and a picnic; there are reservable picnic areas in the park. The playground has restrooms nearby. Best months are April through October when the sailing club is active and bay winds are manageable. Avoid November through March if the kayak center is your main draw since it closes for winter. Kids ages 5–8 will get the most out of the sailing option; the playground and trail loop work for ages 3 and up.
