Wrestling with your toddler guide

Rough-and-tumble play · 5–10 minutes

Gentle tumble

You on your back, kid on your chest — slow rolls on a rug or bed. You lose every pin; they choose how close to get.

Reach for this when

they're clinging to your leg after daycare or bouncing on the couch and you need connection before dinner.

What you need

  • Soft surface (rug, carpet, or bed)
  • Clear space — no coffee table corners

How to play

  1. You: Clear a patch of rug or sit on the bed edge — move the coffee table if needed. They: Watch where the soft spot is; no climbing yet.
  2. You: Kneel, lie on your back, and lift them onto your chest facing you. Hold their hips lightly. They: Lean in as much or as little as they want.
  3. You: Roll slowly to one side together, then back — one direction at a time. They: Giggle, say "wee," or stay still; all fine.
  4. You: Let them "pin" you by sitting on your belly; flop when they push your shoulder. They: Push, climb, and declare victory.
  5. You: End after three pins or when they climb off — sit up together, one hug, done. They: Choose when to stop; you honor it.

If it flops

Scared of the roll? Skip rolling — stay on your back and let them crawl over you like a bridge. Same connection, zero momentum.
