How to Do It
When your kid heads to the corner, let them settle into the seating with the blanket and a book or stuffed animal. That is it. Resist the urge to talk them through anything or fix the feeling. Your job is to make the space safe and then give them room. Stay close enough that they know you are there, far enough that they are not performing for you. The cozy enclosure and the predictable quiet do the regulating. When they are ready, they will come out. Let coming back be their call, not yours.
Tips & Tricks
Keep the books in this corner genuinely calm, nothing loud, fast, or overstimulating. Soft lighting helps if you can manage it. A weighted lap pad or a heavier blanket can add a settling, grounding pressure for kids who like it. The hardest part for most parents is doing less. Trust the quiet.
Variations
For a toddler, you are likely in the corner with them, reading softly or just holding them; the closeness is the reset. For a preschooler, step back and let them choose the book and the blanket and run the retreat mostly on their own. For an early-elementary kid, offer a journal or sketchpad alongside the books so they can write or draw the feeling out if they want. Some older kids settle fastest with calming music in headphones; add that as an option, not a requirement.
