Loose parts tray guide

Loose parts play · 10–15 minutes

Sorting pattern

Two fabric squares as zones — rocks here, pinecones there. You sort one pair; they continue or invent their own rule.

Reach for this when

you need ten quiet minutes at the table and they're already sitting in a chair.

What you need

  • Two contrasting fabric squares
  • Rocks
  • Pinecones
  • Spools (optional third zone)

How to play

  1. You: Lay two fabric squares side by side on the tray — different colors or textures. They: Watch the new layout; don't sort yet.
  2. You: Sort one rock onto each square. Say nothing else required. They: Notice the pattern (or not).
  3. You: Hand them a pinecone. If they match your pattern, nod. If they make a new rule, follow theirs. They: Sort by your rule, their rule, or no rule.
  4. You: End with "one more sort each" — then parts go back in the bucket. They: Drop the last few in; the bucket is the close.

If it flops

Mixes everything together? That's also a pattern — name it ("all mixed up") and reset tomorrow.
